Rising 400m star Miller hoping for another gold in Barcelona Dec 15, 2011

One of the most anticipated races at next summer’s IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona will be the women’s 400m where Shaunae Miller will be a strong favourite to defend the title she won in Moncton nearly two years ago. After a long day on the track and in the field, at the 16th edition of the Pan American Games, The Bahamas closed with one medal.

Ending his season on a high note was Donald Thomas, who cleared 2.32 meters - 7' 3'' – for the gold, down in Guadalajara, Mexico. Thomas secured The Bahamas' first gold in any sport in Guadalajara and he improved his silver from Rio 2007. (via freeport.nassauguardian.net)

A full cross-country season is needed in order to provide Bahamian athletes with as much off-season training as possible, voiced several coaches yesterday. President of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) Mike Sands feels the same way, and stated that more thought will be given to the idea of expanding the season. The Bahamas' eight-member team representing the country at the fourth Commonwealth Youth Games in Douglas, Isle of Man, returned home amidst accolades from its coaching staff.

Pauline Davis-Thompson has made history for The Bahamas again. The former ‘Golden Girl’ was re-elected to the International Association of Athletic Federations’ (IAAF) Council on Wednesday here in Daegu, becoming the first Bahamian to be chosen for two terms. Championships in Daegu, South Korea, set for August 27 to September 4.

But Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) executives said they are still seeking the financial assistance to cover the estimated cost of $91,000 for their travel.

Yesterday, the first part of the team - led by team manager Ralf McKinney and including athletes Trevor Barry, Adrian Griffith, Ramon Miller and Anthonique Strachan - left town for Atlanta, Georgia and then Seoul.

 

Michael Mathieu, Demetrius Pinder and Latoy Williams all left from Texas and will meet up with the team in Seoul. The other members of the team are scheduled to leave today from Atlanta and fly directly into Seoul.

Bahamas has good anti-doping record Jason Byrne Aug 17, 2011

There was a time in world athletics when a great cloud of suspicion hovered over countries from the Iron Curtain Bloc.

The strong feelings of many in the rest of the world that athletes from those countries were competing unfairly and winning medals due to enhanced substances, were later justified.

It was established that there was in fact a system of doping that favored many of those athletes.

The falling of the Iron Curtain caused a lot of information regarding systematic doping to surface. (via Freeport News)
